Winning trainer Sue Smith said: "He's a grand little horse and you can ride him anywhere and anyhow you like. We knew he would stay, the ground was right and he had hardly any weight, plus 'Man' gave him a great ride."

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "It was a result beyond our wildest dreams. The winner seemed to slip off every radar. We thought Mon Mome's victory a few years ago was superb but this was every bit as good. Turnover went through the roof as the nation came out for its annual flutter. The race is once again in rude health and the sun shone on the bookies at Aintree."

Sue Smith became only the third female in history to train the winner of the John Smith's Grand National (after Jenny Pitman and Venetia Williams) and said of Auroras Encore: "I knew the ground was right for him and hoped everything else was. I just feel sorry for the previous owners, who were wonderful and sold him because of ill health."

Scottish-born jockey Ryan Mania added: "I couldn't fault the old horse. He was second in the Scottish National last year and I thought I should stay loyal to him and thank God I did. I never really had an anxious moment, he made a couple of mistakes, that's all."
