Before the tournament got underway, Wayne Rooney was favourite to be England's top scorer. He finally gets to kick a ball in anger tonight. The nation's hopes rest mainly on the 'White Pelé' , but is he so good that England could compete with Spain in the quarter-finals if they finish behind France? Fantastic ability but I'm not too sure he can turn England from mediocre into world beaters.

In the other game, meanwhile, France need a point to advance against a Sweden team that suffered a similar fate to Ireland and were knocked out of two games. Karim Benzema is, once again, the man to watch for them.

During the Ukrainian anthem, meanwhile, Shevchenko raises his arms to salute his adoring fans. He will watch from the bench at the beginning but surely he'll come on?

So as it stands, England will top the group on seven points, France will be in second on four, Sweden and Ukraine will be on, erm, the way home. (Yes, I wrote this fully realising that Ukraine are still home. Still, felt it was necessary to highlight one of football's cliches)
